Just Be Consistent
One of my favorite phrases is, “Keep that same energy”. It can be applied to most instances. And what I really mean is, be consistent across the board. Yesterday morning, reports came out that former Seattle Seahawks tackle Chad Wheeler beat his Black (I only bring up race to make a point later) girlfriend unconscious to the point he thought she was dead. I knew nothing of the incident until my cousin messaged me on Instagram about it. And up until yesterday evening, there was little to no media coverage on the incident. The pictures of her after the altercation are chilling. Her face almost unrecognizable.

Yet still, it wasn’t being picked up by major outlets. Why is that you might ask? To emphasize on an earlier point, it’s because this is a white man beating on a Black woman. If this was a Black man, it would be everywhere. Look at Ray Rice. Or even a Michael Vick. Different incident, yet my sentiments are the same. White privilege strikes once again.
Now I’m not even going to get into the NFL’s long, murky history with domestic violence cases. That’s an entirely different conversation. I write this piece to point out the rather obvious assumption of innocence given to white Americans. The picture above was the one circulating when it did eventually become publicized. But why not a mugshot? Or a picture of him not in his uniform? My answer would simply be because he is white. Fight me on it if you want but that’s the honest to God truth.
I write this piece really for two reasons. One, I think this needs to be talked about more and I hope he is charged and convicted to the highest degree for what he did to her. But also because we live in a world so polarized by race relations. Yet instances like these aren’t making those issues any better. I hope I live to see the day where there is consistency in media coverage towards Black people. Because honestly, I’m tired of seeing white people do crazy things and the media treat it as mental illness or a bad decision. Call it like it is. Terrorism or crime. Keep that same energy as before, and be consistent.
